What the data says
Regularity
A measure of how consistent sleep timing is from day to day.
Source: Wearable-based sleep cohort studies
Most sleep advice focuses on hours per night. Researchers using wearable data are adding a second variable: how regular the timing is.
Several large studies using activity trackers associate more regular sleep schedules with favourable health markers, even after accounting for duration.
These are observational findings, and irregular sleep often travels with shift work, stress or illness, which complicates interpretation.
Keeping roughly consistent bed and wake times is low-risk and aligns with long-standing sleep hygiene advice.
Timing may matter alongside total hours, not instead of them.
