Sauna bathing has become a popular wellness habit, and much of its reputation traces back to one Finnish cohort.
The study followed middle-aged men over many years and found that more frequent sauna use was associated with lower rates of cardiovascular events.
Because the design is observational, frequent sauna users may differ in other ways, such as income, leisure time or baseline health.
Sauna use is generally considered safe for healthy adults, but people with heart conditions or low blood pressure should check with a clinician before starting.
