Consumer Microbiome Tests Are Not Yet Actionable

The sequencing is real. The interpretation layer sold alongside it is mostly extrapolation.

What the data says

No reference

There is no agreed healthy reference microbiome against which a consumer sample can be scored.

Sequencing a stool sample tells you which bacterial genes were present in that sample. Composition varies with recent meals, transit time, sampling site, and the sequencing method used.

There is no consensus healthy baseline, which means personalised scores and food recommendations are built on models that have rarely been validated prospectively.

Where microbiome analysis is clinically useful is narrow and specific: certain infections and defined conditions, ordered by a clinician.

The interventions with actual human data behind them are dietary fiber diversity and fermented foods, and neither requires a test to start.
