Wearing a Glucose Monitor Without Diabetes: What It Can Actually Tell You

Continuous glucose monitors are the flagship biohacking device. The signal is real; most of the interpretations around it are not.

Continuous glucose monitors were designed to keep people with diabetes out of dangerous lows and sustained highs. Used by someone with normal fasting glucose and a normal HbA1c, the device is measuring variation inside a healthy range — and the variation is largely normal physiology.

Two things a CGM genuinely does well for a metabolically healthy user. It shows the size and duration of your response to specific real meals, which is more individual than nutrition labels suggest. And it makes the effect of context obvious: a ten-minute walk after eating, or a bad night of sleep, changes the curve visibly.

What it does poorly is diagnose. Interstitial readings lag blood by five to fifteen minutes, sensor-to-sensor variance is meaningful, and compression during sleep produces false lows that look alarming on a graph. Chasing a flat line by cutting fruit and intact grains is a worse diet in exchange for a prettier chart.

A reasonable protocol: wear one sensor for two weeks, log meals honestly, identify the three or four foods that produce your largest and longest responses, test pairing or sequencing changes on those, then stop wearing it. Continuous monitoring past that point mostly produces anxiety rather than information.

A post-meal rise is not damage. In a metabolically healthy person it is the system working.
